1 and 5 both are constant so we can never express it as 1=5 or 5=1 because it is an inequality(1<5 or 5>1).
actually the whole question is absolutely wrong.
the answer for this question is only and only 54325 according to pattern.
I'll be honest. I was gong to say 54325. But after second thought I will say 1. (Second thought I had only after seeing blog). :)
the answer should be 54325 but it is not a proper mathemetics question. The level of Harvard test is very obvioius.

Well, in my point of view there are two possible answers
5=1 or 54325...Generally Speaking 54325 deems to be approximately accurate...however 5=1 is illogical bt in Maths there are many possibilties... :P

5 = 3 + 1 + 1 i.e. 325 + 5 + 5 = 335
or

Both 54325 and 1 are equally best answers. And here’s why:
The sequence has no sense in math, but rather looks like a pattern. Some of these have to be symbols. There are 2 simple cases:
- The “=” here is not the Equality from mathematics, but just a symbol. One cannot assume this “=” symbol has the symmetric property. We reformulate the problem: 1 # 5, 2 # 25, 3 # 325, 4 # 4325, 5 # 54325. So 54325 is the answer.
- We could also consider “=” as Equality and 1,2,3,4,5,25,325,4325 are symbols. We reformulate the problem: a = x, b = y, c = z, d = t, x = a. Now 1 is the answer.
Other cases:
- Both “=” and the numbers 1,2,3,..4325 are symbols. If we reformulate: a # x, b # y, c# z, d # t, x # ?. Now “x # a” seems the only connection. So another 1 as answer.
- All characters are symbols: a # e, b # be, c # cbe, d # dcbe, e # ? . Now “edcbe” seems the natural answer. Another 54325 as answer.
- Maybe even the comma is a symbol =P
It’s just a matter of symbols, there is no math here.

Since 5=1 is a fallacy, that is: the value 5 is not equal to the value 1 this will always be false. Clearly the equal sign has NO mathematical value and hence it does not follow that the converse of 5=1 is true. That is, one cannot conclude that 5=1.
NB. 5 and 1 are not variables.
So it is just a pattern that is all NO maths involved. The '=' can be replaced with any other symbol *,@ and so on.
Thus the sequence: 5=54325 ,6=654325,7=7654325 and so on.
